This motor is the motor output C Harley Davidson WLA Class. This model had been produced for military purposes in the United States entered World War II. This model is based on a model that has been launched for the civilians before the WL type and type 45 solo, so-called motor single passenger with cylinder 470cc of capacity. On the same machine as well, artifacts are also models of the tricycle Servi Car (type G).
WLA name itself is not a series of arbitrary code, but have the meanings respectively. The letter W is a symbol that indicates that the motor is intended for family motor. Letter L means "Low Compression" that exists only on the motor type W. and the last letter of A indicates that motor was intended for military purposes (Army).
Type WLA itself is actually almost similar to the type for ordinary civil, or more details, type of WL. This type of thing that distinguishes "military" type as "civilian" of which lies in:
-Paint and finishing. The surface is usually painted with the paint color Olive drab or black or Parkerized or painted with white. Some parts are generally left plain with no paint.
-Blackout lights. This tool serves to reduce the ability to see in the night, the WLA type motor is equipped with a set of blackout for the headlights and taillights.
-Protection of water. On the side of this bike are generally protective of water there is now eliminated.
-Accessories. This motor is equipped with a large rack for radio equipment, ammunition boxes, wrapping Thompson submachine that made with leather, side plate, protective gaiters and wind that can be arranged. Most motors in the standard state in the form of wind or just extra protective shield once.
History
Harley Davidson WLA types begin production in small quantities in 1940 as a military expansion. But then began to show a significant amount of production when the United States began to participate in the second World War with the production of more than 90,000 during the war. This type of motor manufacturers also produce type WLA for Canadian soldiers who later was named the WLC. Also this motor also supplied also to the UK, South Africa and its allies, although in limited quantities.
Not as usual, all Harley Davidson WLA produced after Pearl Harbor marked "1942 production" and the motor is known as 42WLA. But the conversion of motor type code does not change the specifications of this type of WLA. While the WLC mostly manufactured in 1943 and coded 43WLC. The code can be used to provide specific data about the time of manufacture of these motors and parts also coded date and month. But the bike frame is not given a serial number so it can not be known with certainty the date of manufacture.
Many of the motor type WLA is sent to the allies on the program "Lend Lease". State the most widely purchased type of this is the Soviet Union, with sales of more than 30,000 units. Production WLA become obstructed after the Second World War, but then rose again when the motor to help supply the Korean War from 1949 to 1952. Most types of WLA are generally owned by people of the west sold. So many young soldiers want to have a Harley Davidson is such that they see while on the road or in the garage because considering the price of a used motor is pretty cheap.
However, this does not guarantee that a handful of the original WLA motorcycle type resurfaced in the United States or even Western Europe. Significant changes to the WLA populations remaining in the Soviet Union, both contained in the store and who has become private property. With little access to original spare parts, lack of cultural Chopper, and the absence of exports to the west, this bike will probably remain a lot of numbers after the impact of the cold war. Russia and the Soviet Union's founder countries is now a producer for WLA Harley Davidson parts and spare parts.
Technology
The kitchen is the spur of the WLA Side valve design, which incorporates an efficiency into an overhead valve design. Harley Davidson had already added valve in producing machines for the "Big Twins" her, but "small twin" more famous flathead design with a reliable motor bike which is more than just power. This engine is the residual of the production in 1937 to 1973 in the Servi-Car, although this machine replaces K Model flathead engine into a two-wheeled vehicles. This motor uses fuel octane levels around 74%, even though it is a minimum standard. This motor has a springer type front suspension, while the back has no suspense, so that the motor is also called Hard Tail motorcycle.
Function
United States Army uses these motors are usually just to patrol the specific area. This is because of the limited reach of radio signals and the severity of the radio equipment being transported by the motor that causes a lack of flexibility in driving. Something similar also happened in Indonesia. These motors are commonly used by police to get around to the area to maintain security. It is the responsibility of the Police.
In the description contained in the collections of museums Police said that once the motor is used for the patrol to provide security for cities around the year 1943. In this year the Indonesian nation is not yet independent from colonialism by the Japanese people. According to the explanation of one of the officers in the Police museum, the motors are on display there had also ridden by Peltu Soedomo who is a former head of the Parent Pjr. Situbondo.
